Ruby The Robot

One of my side projects, the creation of a comic and an iOS Messenger sticker pack based on Ruby, a robot character I created.

The Character Design

The character type is meant to be a Robot and therefore I started exploring design ideas around the robot theme. To simplify and modernise the design I used the three main design shapes; Oval, Rectangle, Line.

For the characters proportions, I designed the head to be slightly bigger than the body, giving an overall "toddler" look. This look was important to reflect the character's personality (kind, goofy) and the viewer perception of it, since instinctively we are programmed to protect a baby or a toddler.

The design and character exploration was done in Sketch

Expressions

It was important to convey the correct expressions to convey the correct sentiment. To do this, I used images of cartoon characters and animals to draw inspiration from their expressions.

It was evident that the placement and shape of the eyes is key to convey the correct feelings and expressions.

The Simplicity of Creating a Sticker Pack on Xcode

I was pleasantly surprised how simple it was to create the app, once the characters expressions were finalised on sketch.

I created a new project in Xcode, selected the sticker pack type, App name and team, and finally, just dragged the image assets and dropped them in the corresponding folder in Xcode.

After archiving and uploading the pack to the app store, it was quickly approved and was quickly ready to use.
